How a Roll-Off Dumpster Delivery Actually Works
What to expect from delivery to pickup — step by step. The two minutes of setup, the truck, the protective boards, and what we ask before we send a driver.
Most people have never seen a roll-off dumpster get delivered. The mechanics aren’t complicated, but understanding what’s actually about to happen on your driveway helps the whole process go smoothly.
Here’s the full sequence from booking to pickup.
Before the truck arrives: the booking call
When you book with us, we ask a few questions:
1. What size do you need? 15, 30, or 40 yard. If you’re not sure, we’ll talk through the project to right-size it.
2. Where will it go? Driveway, side yard, street. We need to know the surface (concrete, asphalt, gravel, dirt) and roughly the dimensions of the space.
3. Are there any access constraints? Low overhead branches or wires, narrow gates, steep slopes, soft ground after rain. We’d rather catch issues at booking than at delivery.
4. When do you need it? Same-day if you call before 10 AM in most of our service area. Otherwise next-day or scheduled for the day you want.
5. How long do you need it? Standard rental period is 7 days. We can extend or schedule longer rentals up front.
Two minutes of conversation up front saves headaches at delivery. We’ve seen most placement situations and can usually flag issues before the truck rolls.
The truck
A roll-off truck is a specialized hauler with hydraulic arms that carry the container. The truck approaches the placement spot, the driver lines up the back of the truck with where the box should sit, and the hydraulic system tilts the container off the truck and onto the ground.
Trucks need:
- Approach room. A truck-and-container is roughly 35 ft long. The truck needs space to approach and back into position.
- Overhead clearance. The container, when tilted, reaches about 14 ft up. Branches, wires, eaves, gates — all need clearance.
- Surface stability. The placement surface needs to support the weight of a loaded container. Concrete, asphalt, and compacted gravel are all fine. Soft soil after heavy rain can be a problem.
- Turn-around space (sometimes). On rural roads or long driveways, the truck may need a turn-around point.
For most residential driveways, all of this is straightforward. Issues come up most often on:
- Steep, curved Hill Country driveways
- Lots with low-hanging tree branches
- Properties with low or narrow gate access
- Wet rural lots after extended rain
Placement: the actual moment
When the driver arrives:
- Driver parks. Usually in front of the property or at the end of the drive, depending on the placement spot.
- Brief site walk. Driver confirms the spot you discussed at booking still works. If something has changed (a vehicle is in the way, a gate is locked), we adjust.
- Boards down. We always set 2x10 or 2x12 protective boards under where the container will sit. This is non-negotiable for us — concrete and asphalt drives don’t take damage from a properly-set roll-off.
- Truck backs in. Driver positions the truck with the back end at the placement spot.
- Container lowers. The hydraulic system tilts the container off the truck. The whole thing takes about 90 seconds.
- Driver checks the placement. Ensures the box is level, the swing door is accessible, the boards are properly under the wheels.
- Done. Driver provides the rental period information and confirms pickup arrangements.
The whole on-site process is usually 10–15 minutes.
What you should do (and shouldn’t)
Do:
- Make sure the placement spot is clear when we arrive (no cars, no equipment, no kids’ toys)
- Be available by phone if we need to reach you about a placement question
- Leave any gates unlocked or unlocked codes shared if we need access
Don’t:
- Try to direct placement by hand or stand in the truck’s blind spot
- Move the boards once we’ve placed them
- Move the container yourself once it’s been set (you can’t anyway, but worth saying)
During the rental: what to expect
Once the box is in place, your job is loading it. A few things to know:
Fill line. Every container has a fill line painted inside, usually about a foot below the top edge. Texas DOT rules don’t allow us to haul anything over the rim. Stay at or below the line.
Load distribution. Spread weight evenly. A box loaded heavy on one side can shift during haul.
Door access. The swing door at the back is for big items. Keep it accessible — don’t load the back third of the box solid until late in the project.
Weather. If your project runs through Texas storm season, consider tarping during heavy rain. Wet debris weighs significantly more.
Calling for swap or extension. If you fill it before pickup or need more time, call us. Easier to plan than to react.
Pickup: the reverse process
When you’re done — or when your rental period ends — call to schedule pickup. The process is essentially delivery in reverse:
- Driver arrives at the agreed-upon time window.
- Brief check. Driver verifies the load isn’t over the fill line and the box is clear of obstacles.
- Truck backs in. Same approach as delivery.
- Hydraulic lift. The container tilts back onto the truck.
- Boards picked up. We take the protective boards with us.
- Site check. Driver confirms the area is clear and there’s no damage.
- Truck leaves with the loaded container.
Pickup is usually a 5–10 minute process, faster than delivery.
Issues that can come up
Box overfilled. If the load is over the fill line, we can’t legally haul it. The driver will ask you to remove materials until it’s at or below the line, then haul. If we have to come back for a second pickup, there’s a return-trip fee.
Prohibited items in the load. If we spot something prohibited (paint, chemicals, tires, freon-still appliances), we’ll let you know before haul. If we find it at the landfill, we may have to bring the load back for sorting, which has fees.
Access changed since delivery. Sometimes a gate gets locked, a vehicle is in the way, or weather has changed ground conditions. We can usually work around — but communicate with us.
Damage concerns. With protective boards properly placed, damage is rare. If you’re concerned about a specific surface (a stamped concrete drive, a paver patio), mention it at booking and we can discuss extra protection.
What you can plan for
For a typical residential rental, the timeline looks like:
- Booking call: 5 minutes
- Delivery window: 2–4 hours we’ll give you a window for; actual placement is 15 minutes
- Loading time: depends on your project (a weekend cleanout vs. a multi-week renovation)
- Pickup window: 2–4 hour window; actual pickup is 5–10 minutes
Same-day delivery is usually available in Boerne, Mount Vernon, and surrounding areas if you call before 10 AM. For projects with specific start dates, scheduling 1–2 days ahead gives more flexibility on timing.
What we do that some others don’t
A few things we make a habit of:
- Boards under every container, every time. Even on gravel and dirt — they help with leveling and pickup.
- Site walk before placement. Even on jobs we’ve done before. Conditions change.
- Direct phone access. When you call us, you reach a person who can answer questions and make decisions, not a routing system.
- Same-day where possible. Especially in Boerne and Mount Vernon during normal weeks.
- Honest sizing. If a 30 isn’t right for your project, we’ll say so even if it means a smaller rental.
Family-owned businesses earn long-term customers through small things. We try to do the small things right.
If you’re planning a project and want to talk through what delivery would look like at your property, give us a holler at (903) 806-4181 or book online. Two minutes on the phone covers most questions.
